Very special demands are made on lamps for use in studios or on stages. These demands involve light luminosity, heat build-up and precision of filament positioning in order to enable the highest possible light yield and the highest possible precision of light emission.

The history of stage performance began with the ancient Greeks under the open skies. So the first productions were open-air events and therefore very much independent of artificial lighting.

Illumination was only necessary when plays were performed at night. At the time, torches, tallow candles and oil lamps were used to this end. Only when the theatre withdrew to covered, enclosed rooms did well-planned theatre lighting become necessary. Everything that was available at the time was used, including candles, oil lamps and later gas lamps.

The arc lamp made the use of real beam lamps possible at the beginning of the 19th century. So began the era of the limelight.
